(1803-82) Born at Boston, Mass., he was a famous American essayist, lecturer and poet. His poetry ranks him in the company of Edgar Allen Poe, Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. He later spoke out boldly against slavery, and formed a group of men around him known as the Saturday Club for monthly discussions. Among the group were the notables; Longfellow, Hawthorne, Motley, Dana, Agassiz, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Original 1800's engraved portrait tipped to 6 x 9 1/4 album page. Published by S.L. Smith.
