Authentic, original woodcut engraving that was published in the October 18, 1862 issue of Harper's Weekly, New York. Caption: Who Are The N___r (N word fully spelled out) Worshipers? Rebel Planter- "Yes, my Son, you must go to the War. I can't spare Pomp; he cost me Twelve Hundred Dollars, and he might get shot. Besides, you know you couldn't stoop to work like a field hand!" 6 3/4 x 5 1/4. Harper's Weekly and the date are printed in the margin. The son is in full military uniform with a bed roll on his back, and carrying a bag, and holding his musket at his side. This is a stark example of what is today without a doubt a very shocking caption that was used to describe what life was like in the United States in 1862, and it was brought to the general public across this country and abroad, by this New York publication, the widest circulating illustrated newspaper in America at that time, the famous and celebrated Harper's Weekly Illustrated.
