(1836-1906) Alden was an 1856 graduate of Brown University and received his medical degree from Pennsylvania Medical College in 1858. In 1859, he passed the examination for the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army, and was immediately employed to accompany recruits to Fort Defiance where he participated in a campaign against the Navajo Indians. On June 23, 1860, he was commissioned Assistant Surgeon, U.S. Army Medical Staff.
