Cabinet Card Photo, General Ulysses S. Grant & Family

(1822-1885) Graduated in the West Point class of 1843. Fought in the Mexican War. Commander-in-Chief of all Union armies 1863-65. He fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and the Appomattox campaign. Served as 18th President of the United States 1869-77.

Wet plate, albumen cabinet card photograph, mounted to 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 card. This view was taken on the front porch of Grant's upstate New York home, called Mt. McGregor, only a month before he died. Grant is seated on a chair in the center, wearing a top hat. His...

(1816-94) Graduated in the West Point class of 1837. After fighting against the Seminoles, he resigned to study law and afterwards began practice in Rocky Mount, Va. He became a member of the house of delagates, and the commonwealth's attorney, and when war broke out with Mexico he was a major of Virginia volunteers. At the start of the Civil War he was promptly appointed as colonel of the 24th Va. Inf., which he led at 1st Manassas. He was promoted to rank of brigadier general to rank from July 21, 1861, and took part in all the engagements of the Army...

Colonel 105th Illinois Infantry

(1820-92) Born at Topsham, Vermont, he graduated from Dartmouth College, in 1847. Before the war he was a physician and druggist. He was a resident of Sycamore, Illinois when he enlisted on Sept. 18, 1861, as captain, and was commissioned into the 8th Illinois Cavalry. He was promoted to major, Jan. 12, 1862. He was commissioned colonel, of the 105th Illinois Infantry, on Sept. 2, 1862. Promoted to brevet brigadier general, Mar. 16, 1865, for gallantry in the Atlanta campaign, and the 1865 Carolinas campaign....

(1835-93) In July 1861, he was appointed major of the 6th Iowa Infantry and served on the staff of General John Pope during the early operations in Mississippi. Promoted to colonel, he demonstrated conspicuous gallantry at Corinth and in the Vicksburg campaign, after which he was promoted to brigadier general. Corse was badly wounded at the battle of Chattanooga but returned in time to participate in the Atlanta campaign. He was the hero of the battle of Allatoona Pass in which S.G. (1820-1886) In June 1861, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel 2nd Vermont Infantry, and in July 1862, Colonel 9th Vermont Infantry. He was later promoted to rank of Brigadier General, on March 11, 1863.
