Addressed to prominent South Carolinian James Simons

Postally used Confederate envelope addressed in ink to James Simons, Esqr., Solic[ito]r., Charleston, S.C., with Aiken, S.C., Jan. 8 postmark, and 10 cents Jeff Davis postage stamp. Very fine homemade cover made from a piece of stationary with partial wax seal visible on the reverse.

James Simons: (1813-79) Son of a Revolutionary War officer and state representative, he attended Pendleton Academy, the College of Charleston, and was an honor graduate of the University of South...

1861 ALABAMA CONFEDERATE COVER

Early Confederate period, postally used envelope. Addressed in ink to Mr. E.L. Stickney, Marion, Perry Co., Ala., with 3 cents rose, George Washington postage stamp, which is tied on with a very clear C.D.S. of Feb. 13, 1861. The state of Ala. is also clearly visible in the postmark. The last 2 letters of the city are "LE" which may be Hunstville. There is a period pencil docket on the top of the cover which reads, Feb. 23rd/61, Kt ret'd from Fort. This is most likely a reference to the content of the letter that was once carried by this cover....

The 5th Alabama Infantry served in the Army of Northern Virginia and saw action at Williamsburg, Seven Pines (27 killed, 128 wounded), Malvern Hill (92 killed and wounded), Chancellorsville (24 killed, 133 wounded), Gettysburg (190 killed and wounded), the Wilderness,...

Postally used Confederate soldier's envelope addressed in ink. From, Wm. R. Hughes, Co. A, 41st Ala. Regt. [To], Mrs. Sarah A. Hughes, Northport Post Office, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. [Due] 10 stamped in red. Part of the back flap is missing where the envelope was opened. Soiling and wear.

The 41st Alabama Infantry fought valiantly at Murfreesboro, served in the Vicksburg campaign, and immortalized itself at Chickamauga, where they had 147 men killed and wounded. Moving to Virginia, they saw action at Drewry's Bluff, Dutch Gap, Petersburg,...

Charleston, South Carolina is where the Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Fort Sumter was fired upon by Confederate batteries. Stateburg is located in Sumter County, S.C.
