Negative image that was produced on a glass plate and viewed as a positive with the addition of a black backing. Invented by Frederick Scott Archer of Britain, and popularized by James Cutting of Boston, Mass. It was introduced in the early 1850's with it's most popular years being 1856-59, with production waning through the Civil War years with the invention of the tintype and carte de visite photographs.
