(1827-90) He was one of those rare militia officers who rose to eminence in the volunteer ranks during the Civil War and remained in the Regular Army to earn the rank of major general. He was at 1st Bull Run in command of the 2nd Conn. Inf., a 90 day unit. He then recruited the 7th Conn. Inf. taking part with them in the capture of Port Royal and the siege and capture of Fort Pulaski. Appointed brigadier general, he served in the various operations against Charleston until the fall of 1863 when he was transferred to Butler's Army of the James, taking over...

GENERAL GEORGE B. MC CLELLAN

(1826-85) Graduated in the West Point class of 1846 and fought in the Mexican War. Hailed at the beginning of the Civil War as the "Young Napoleon," he proved to be a brilliant military organizer, administrator, and trainer of men, but an officer totally lacking in the essential qualities of successful command of large forces in battle. He saw action at Rich Mountain, W.V., in the 1862 Virginia Peninsular campaign and at the battle of Antietam. He was defeated for president in 1864 by Abraham Lincoln.

(1835-84) Graduated #2 in the West Point class of 1855. In the spring of 1862, he was appointed as the chief engineer of Gen. Butler's expedition against New Orleans. After the occupation, Weitzel became 2nd in command and acting mayor, and was promoted to brigadier general. He commanded a division under Gen. Banks at Port Hudson and then returned east to become chief engineer of Butler's Army of the James operating against Petersburg. (1822-1885) Graduated in the West Point class of 1843. Fought in the Mexican War. Commander-in-Chief of all Union armies 1863-65. He fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and in the Appomattox campaign. Served as 18th President of the United States 1869-77.

Commander of the famed "Hawkins Zouaves"

(1831-1920) He fought in the Mexican War and at the beginning of the Civil War organized the famed "Hawkins Zouaves," which mustered into the Union army as the 9th New York Infantry, with Hawkins as their colonel. They saw action at Big Bethel, Fort Hatteras, Roanoke Island, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Suffolk. Hawkins was promoted to rank of brevet brigadier general for meritorious and gallant Civil War service.

(1831-88) A prominent Civil War commander, he graduated in the West Point class of 1853. Appointed brigadier general of volunteers, Sept. 13, 1862, and major general, March 16, 1863. Fought in the battles of Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, the Shenandoah Valley and Appomattox campaigns, to name but a few. Sheridan also saw action against the Plains Indians in the 1870's.

(1814-1879) Graduated in the West Point class of 1837. He displayed a gallant record in the Mexican War.
