Colonel 14th Ohio Infantry

At the battle of Chickamauga, he performed the most conspicuous act of personal courage recorded of any general officer on the Union side during the Civil War!

On the first day of the battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863, John Burns, the former constable of the town, grabbed his old flintlock musket and joined in the fight. He strolled onto the battlefield and asked Colonel Langhorne Wister of the 150th Pa. Inf. where to fight. CDV, President Abraham Lincoln

Extremely rare 1863 view!

(1809-1865) Illinois lawyer. 16th President U.S.A., 1861-65. Led the Union through the Civil War. Famous for The Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves, and the Gettysburg Address, at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery. His second term in the White House was cut short when he became the first American President to be assassinated. He was shot by the famous actor, John Wilkes Booth, at Ford's Theatre, Washington, D.C., on the evening of April 14, 1865, dying early the next morning.

(1826-86) Nicknamed "Black Jack." He served in the Mexican War as a lieutenant of Illinois volunteers; and was perhap's the Union's premier civilian general during the Civil War. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1858 and 1860, he attended the Democratic National Convention in Charleston as a supporter of Stephen A. Douglas. After fighting at 1st Bull Run, he returned to Illinois to recruit the 31st Illinois Infantry of which he was commissioned colonel. An instant success as a field commander, he saw action...

(1830-1909) Graduated #4 in the West Point class of 1846. Was appointed Colonel of the 3rd Maine Infantry, in June 1861. He saw action at 1st Bull Run, Yorktown, and Fair Oaks where he received two serious wounds and lost his right arm. CDV, General John F. Reynolds

Killed on July 1, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg

(1820-1863) Born in Lancaster, Pa., only about 50 miles from where he would be killed in battle, he was a West Point graduate in the class of 1837, and a Mexican War veteran. He was captured on the Virginia peninsula in 1862, and commanded the I Corps, Army of the Potomac, at Fredericksburg. Reynolds is said to have been offered command of the Army of the Potomac after Chancellorsville replacing Joe Hooker, but he declined the honor because he felt Washington would not give him a free hand....

(1845-76) The younger brother of the flamboyant Civil War General George A. Custer. Thomas enlisted as a 16 year old private on Sept. 2, 1861, and was mustered into Co. H, 21st Ohio Infantry. He served with this regiment until Oct. 10, 1864, when he was commissioned 2nd lieutenant, in the 6th Michigan Cavalry, having seen action at such places as Bowling Green, Ky., Huntsville, Ala.,...

(1824-1886) Graduated in the West Point class of 1844. He won a brevet for gallantry in the Mexican War. Played a gallant role in the 1862 Virgininia Peninsular campaign, and in the 1862 Maryland campaign which climaxed into the battle of Antietam. He greatly distinguished himself in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. During the battle of Gettysburg, Hancock commanded the 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac. CDV, General Melancthon S. Wade

(1802-68) Born in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father was one of the very first settlers in Ohio. He was active in the Ohio militia for quite a number of years earning the rank of brigadier general. When the Civil War broke out he was actively engaged in recruiting and organizing Ohio volunteers. He was commissioned brigadier general in the U.S. Army, on Oct. 1, 1861. He served as the first post commander at Camp Dennison, near Cincinnati. Poor health and old age forced him to retire from the army in 1862.
