(1833-1907) A lawyer before the war, he enlisted on July 12, 1861, and was commissioned captain, 5th Kansas Cavalry. Commissioned lieutenant colonel, 79th U.S. Colored Infantry, Jan. 13, 1863; promoted to colonel, May 2, 1863; and brevet brigadier general, Feb. 13, 1865. After the Civil War, he served as captain, in the 8th U.S. Cavalry, promoted to brevet major for conspicious gallantry in engagements with Indians on the Verde, Arizona; retired Jan. 12, 1891.
