Autograph, Wendell Phillips
The famous Abolitionist
(1811-84) Was the son of the first mayor of Boston. Graduated from the Boston Latin School and Harvard Law School but did not practice long before becoming a disciple and colleague of William Lloyd Garrison and Elijah P. Lovejoy. He lectured throughout the North and was active in the American Anti-Slavery Society. After the war he became active in other reforms advocating temperance and prohibition, women's suffrage, labor unions and rights of Indians.

8 x 10, imprinted form, filled out in ink. Fort Columbus, N.Y., January 18, 1863. Received from Simeon Draper, Provost Marshal General, the following described person, a deserter, viz.: Rank, Priv. Name, C.H. Maine. Company, C. Regiment, 1st. State, Rhode Island Cavalry. The document has been signed by James S. Casey, 1st Lt., 5 Infty., U.S.A. Light wear. Very fine.

Midshipman, August 31, 1836; Passed Midshipman, July 1, 1842; Master, Sept. 5, 1849; Lieutenant, April 19, 1850; Died, July 17, 1857. Believe him to be a relative of Stephen Decatur of Revolutionary War fame.
