(1808-75) Congressman, Senator and Governor of Tennessee. He was nominated and elected vice president on the Union Republican ticket in 1864. Upon Abraham Lincoln's assassination in April 1865, he became our 17th president and resolved to follow Lincoln's plans for reconstruction without bitterness or malice. His reconstruction plan clashed drastically with that of the Radical Republicans in congress, and Johnson's term was one humiliation after another, culminating on Feb. 24, 1868 with a resolution of impeachment against him. The editor of Harper's Weekly illustrated newspaper

(1824-92) Born in Providence, R.I. He was the editor of Harper's Weekly newspaper from 1863-92. He was also a well known orator and writer for reform including antislavery campaigns, and women's rights and suffrage.

(1808-73) After graduating from Dartmouth, he practiced law in Ohio and became a leader in the Liberty, later Free-Soil, party. Elected to the Senate in 1849, he was chosen Governor of Ohio, representing the new Republican party, in 1855 and served for two terms. He had an extreme anti-slavery viewpoint, which prevented his getting the presidential nomination in 1860. (1758-1827) Born in Boston, he graduated from Harvard in 1776, and promptly enlisted in the Continental artillery regiment of his brother-in-law Thomas Crafts, where he served until 1778. After his military service Gore studied law with John Lowell, and was admitted to the bar in 1778 and commenced practice in Boston. He served in the Massachusetts State Legislature in 1788. (1703-58) Born in East Windsor, Connecticut Colony. A Christian preacher, he is considered to be America's most important philosophical theologian, and one of its greatest intellectuals. Edwards played a critical role in shaping the First Great Awakening, and was the author of many books. He was the grandfather of Aaron Burr, the 3rd Vice President of the United States, and died from a small pox inoculation in 1758 while serving as president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University).
