Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 3/8 x 3 3/4 card. Artist rendition of President Lincoln and the first lady. No actual photographs were ever taken of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln together. Imprint on front, Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1865 by Frank Noe in the Clerk's office of the district Court of Eastern district of Pennsylvania. With title, Mr. Lincoln and Wife. Card is trimmed. A few scattered stains. Corner and edge wear. Scarce cdv.

Erastus B. Bigelow, Inventor

(1814-79) Born in West Boylston, Massachusetts. An inventive genius, his first invention came at the age of 14, when he invented a machine to manufacture piping cord. Of his many inventions, he was best known for his development of the power loom for carpet manufacturing.

Original, 1800's portrait engraving. 6 x 9. Engraved by W.G. Jackman. Published by D. Appleton & Co., New York. Excellent. This same portrait hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, in Washington, D.C.

Josh Billings, American Humorist

(1818-85) Born in Lanesborough, Massachusetts. His birth name was Henry Wheeler Shaw. Coming from a political family, his father, Henry Shaw, his grandfather, Samuel Shaw, and his uncle, John Savage, all served as United States Congressmen. Writing under the pen name of Josh Billings, he was one of the most famous 19th century humorists and lecturers in America.

Original 1800's engraving, tipped to 6 x 9 1/4 page. Excellent condition.

Oliver Ames, Governor of Massachusetts

(1831-95) Born in North Easton, Mass., he was educated at Brown University. His father, Oakes Ames, was a U.S. Congressman, 1862-73, and a founding member of the Massachusetts Republican Party. Oliver was a lieutenant colonel in the Massachusetts Militia before the Civil War, and managed his family's business during the war. He was a partner in Ames & Sons, his family's well known shovel factory. Served as Massachusetts State Senator, 1881-83; Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, 1882-86; and Governor, 1886-88.

(1820-87) Born in Winchenton, Mass., he graduated from Yale in 1844. Served in the Massachusetts State Senate in 1850, and the Massachusetts House of Representatives, 1853-55. Was a U.S. Congressman, 1863-71, and the Governor of Massachusetts, 1872-74.

Original 1800's portrait engraving. Printed signature below his likeness, and title, Governor of Massachusetts, 1872 to 1874. Tipped to 6 x 9 page. Excellent.

(1829-97) Born in Andover, Mass. Attended Phillips Andover Academy and Harvard. Became one of the most prominent lawyers in Massachusetts. Was President of the Boston Bar Association. Had an ancestor killed at Bunker Hill during the American Revolution, and was a member of the Bunker Hill Monument Association. On May 29, 1897, at a meeting of the Suffolk Bar, resolutions were adopted and addresses were made by distinguished members of the Bar, and by Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., of the Supreme Court, in tribute to Shattuck, who had died 3 months...

(1830-93) A thrilling orator, he was one of the founding members of the Republican Party and served as a delegate to the first Republican convention in 1856. A staunch Abraham Lincoln supporter, Blaine was a U.S. Congressman, 1863-76, serving as Speaker of the House, 1869-75. He then served as U.S. Senator, 1876-81, was Secretary of State under President James A. Garfield, was the Republican nomination for president in 1884 losing to Grover Cleveland, and served again as Secretary of State, this time in the administration of President Benjamin Harrison....

He also served as U.S. Congressman, Governor of Massachusetts, Minister to Great Britain, President of Harvard University, Secretary of State and U.S. Senator.

(1824-92) Born in Providence, R.I. He was the editor of Harper's Weekly newspaper from 1863-92. He was also a well known orator and writer for reform including antislavery campaigns, and women's rights and suffrage.

Statesman Lewis Cass

(1782-1866) American statesman. Served as U.S. Marshal for Ohio, 1807-12; fought in the War of 1812; was Governor of Michigan, 1813-31; U.S. Secretary of War, 1831-36; Minister to France, 1836-42; U.S. Senator, 1845-48, and 1849-57; and U.S. Secretary of State, 1857-60. He resigned the latter post in protest when the Buchanan administration refused to reinforce the forts of Charleston, S.C. on the eve of the Civil War.
