GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE & HIS COMMANDERS

Antique portrait engraving. 6 x 8 1/2. Individual oval portraits of General Robert E. Lee, General Turner Ashby, General Jubal A. Early, Colonel John S. Mosby, General Wade Hampton, Major John Pelham, and General P.G.T. Beauregard. Intertwined around the portraits are some battle and camp scene vignettes. General Ashby and Major Pelham were both killed during the war. Very fine.

WILLIAM A. BUCKINGHAM, C.W. GOVERNOR OF CONNECTICUT

(1804-75) A successful merchant and manufacturer, he was the Republican Governor of Connecticut from 1858 to 1866 when he refused nomination. During the Civil War he worked very closely with President Lincoln and raised more soldiers than were required from his state. He served in the Senate until his death and contributed generously to philanthropies, including the Yale theological school. There is a statue of him in the statehouse in Hartford.

Original 1800's period woodcut engraving. Tipped to 6 x 9 1/4 page. Imprint reads: Monument to John Harvard. Here is shown the monument to John Harvard, the founder of Harvard University at Cambridge, the man by virtue of whose generous donations the establishment was made possible. The monument is artistically simple in its conception, being an upright shaft, fifteen feet in height, of solid native granite. It bears the following inscription: On the 26th of September, A.D., 1828, this stone was erected by the graduates of the University at Cambridge in...

CLERGYMAN EDWARD E. HALE

(1822-1909) Author, Unitarian clerygman. Son of Nathan Hale and nephew of Edward Everett. Graduated from Harvard in 1839. Minister to South Congregational Church, Boston, 1856-99. Wrote, "The Man Without A Country," one of the best short stories ever written by an American. He was Chaplain of the U.S. Senate, 1903-09.

Lithographic period print, with printed autograph, tipped to 6 x 9 1/2 album page. Made from a photograph taken in Washington. Excellent.

POET RALPH WALDO EMERSON

(1803-82) Born at Boston, Mass., he was a famous American essayist, lecturer and poet. His poetry ranks him in the company of Edgar Allen Poe, Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. He later spoke out boldly against slavery, and formed a group of men around him known as the Saturday Club for monthly discussions. Among the group were the notables; Longfellow, Hawthorne, Motley, Dana, Agassiz, and Oliver Wendell Holmes.

(1750-1813) Graduated from Harvard in 1769. Parsons had a superb reputation as a lawyer and judge and served as Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, 1806-13.
