Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 3/8 x 4 card. Excellent Civil War era view showing war ships in the harbor at Simon's Town. During the Civil War ships of the Union and Confederacy docked at this port including the famous Confederate raider, C.S.S. Alabama, while she was operating in this area on one of her raids. The Confederate cruiser visited Simon's Town in 1863, and her Captain Raphael Semmes, was entertained at the Admiralty House. Backmark: W. Bremner, Photographer, Simon's Town. Sharp image. Very fine.

The horse at left side of the view is being held by a negro teamster. Note the huge officer standing seventh from the left. He towers over everybody and looks like a giant. 1862 M.B. Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 5/16 x 3 5/8 card. Mount has been trimmed. View of Confederate soldier killed by a shell in the trenches of Fort Mahone, called Fort Damnation by the soldiers, at Petersburg, Va. This view was taken on the morning of April 3, 1865. It has been very nicely hand tinted in color. Backmark: E. & H.T. Anthony, New York. Light age toning. Very rare in cdv format.
