Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 1/2 x 3 3/4 card. Excellent view of what is probably the remnants of an infantry company lined up in front of a building to have their likeness taken for posterity. Very sharp image showing the soldiers either wearing a kepi or slouch hat, over the shoulder belts, oval belt plates, you can see a couple of cap pouches on their belts, and all pose with their muskets with fixed bayonets. A sergeant stands at each end of the company, two officers with swords stand in front, and one officer with sword...

Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 3/8 x 4 card. Scene of Union artilleryman loading a cannon. Soldier standing in front of gun is in the act of ramming, soldier wearing haversack over his shoulder is handing round shot to the loader. Soldier in the right foreground (either officer or non-commissioned officer) has sword attached to his belt. Numerous other soldiers are standing behind the cannon. No backmark. Light age toning and corner wear. The light colored mark at left edge is printed in the photograph. Very fine. Scarce.

Built at Boston, Mass., and commissioned in 1862, the Genesee was a 1120 ton, double ender, sidewheel steam gunboat. In 1862, she served off the coast of North Carolina, and in February 1863 was assigned to the West Gulf Blockading Squadron. She was damaged by gunfire on March 14-15, 1863, while attempting to run the Confederate guns at Port Hudson, La. She continued to serve on the Mississippi River until being sent to Mobile Bay, Ala., and in September 1863, helped destroy the Confederate blockade runner, "Fanny." In August 1864, she served...

(1822-1901) Cousin of Union Admiral David D. Porter. Graduated in the West Point class of 1845. Won the brevets of captain and major for gallantry in the Mexican War. From 1849 to 1855 he was the assistant instructor of artillery at the U.S. Military Academy, and from 1857 to 1860, he served as Albert Sydney Johnston's adjutant in the Utah expedition. CDV General John H. Martindale

(1815-81) Graduated #3 in the West Point class of 1835. On August 9, 1861, he was commissioned brigadier general of volunteers and fought throughout the Peninsular campaign in command of a brigade of General Heintzelman's 3rd Corps. He was military governor of Washington, D.C., and later commanded a division of General Baldy Smith's 18th Corps at Cold Harbor, Bermuda Hundred and Petersburg, subsequently commanding the corps itself until health problems forced him to resign. He was brevetted major general for gallantry at Malvern Hill.

This view of a leg amputation was taken at Camp Letterman Hospital, Gettysburg. Surgeons prepare the leg for amputation, with an assistant administering anethesia. Bottles are visible on the operating table and an open surgeon's kit can be seen on the stool at right. Wooden kick bucket is visible in the foreground. Man on crutches is standing at the left....
