CDV Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia

Libby Prison, established March 26, 1862, was situated on the corner of Cary and 20th streets, on the James River in Richmond, Virginia. The building was the warehouse of Libby and Sons, ship chandlers, before the Civil War. Outside of Andersonville Prison, Libby Prison was perhaps the most notorious Confederate Prison.

This sloop of war was launched on March 20, 1862, at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. Assigned to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, the "Juniata" was first stationed at Norfolk, Va., where her guns protected the navy yard. Ordered to join the West Indies Squadron, she departed Hampton Roads on April 26, 1863, and captured the schooner "Harvest" loaded with Confederate cotton that was bound for Nassau. Joining the squadron on May 5th, she continued to play havoc on Confederate...

Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 3/8 x 4 card. View of the landing showing numerous boats in the river, the wharf with supply wagons, and tents in the foreground. No imprint. This view was taken by Mathew Brady & Co., in June 1864, and is listed in Brady's catalog as view #8892. Very fine image. This would make a nice companion piece to go along with our item UL1933, an 1862 letter written by an officer of the 5th Maine Infantry from Belle Plain Landing, Va., only a week before the battle of Fredericksburg.
