PRINT, LIBBY PRISON, RICHMOND, VA.

Libby Prison, established March 26, 1862, was situated on the corner of Cary and 20th streets, on the James River in Richmond, Virginia. The building was the wharehouse of Libby and Sons, ship chandlers, before the Civil War. Outside of Andersonville Prison, Libby Prison was perhaps the most notorious Confederate Prison.

15 1/4 x 11 1/2, antique print of Libby Prison taken from a late 1800's book on the Civil War, and tinted in color. Detailed descriptive text is printed below. Very fine.

(1822-72) Born in Franklin County, Tenn. He studied and practiced medicine in Hernando County, Miss., from where he raised and commanded the 1st Battalion Mississippi Rifles in the Mexican War as their lieutenant colonel. After serving a term in the Mississippi State House of Representatives, he was appointed United States marshal for Washington Territory by President Franklin Pierce. Was United States Congressman from Washington Territory, 1855-57. He was appointed governor of the territory by President James Buchanan in 1857 but declined the office. He...
