Enlisted on April 23, 1861, and was commissioned 1st lieutenant, of the 14th New York Infantry. Promoted to captain, May 17, 1861; major, Nov. 25, 1861; and lieutenant colonel, June 27, 1862.

Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 3/8 x 4 card. Bust view in uniform with oak leaf visible on his shoulder straps indicating rank of major or lieutenant colonel. Killed in 1861 at the 1st battle of Bull Run!


A Mexican War veteran, he served as a captain of the 9th U.S. Infantry. Before the war he worked with his father-in-law, Charles T. James, in the manufacture and sale of the James cannon and projectiles. He was 36 years old and a resident of Providence, Rhode Island, when he enlisted as a major, on April 17, 1861, and was commissioned into the 1st Rhode Island Infantry. CDV General Hasbrouck Davis

Colonel 12th Illinois Cavalry

(1827-70) A Unitarian minister and lawyer before the war. He enlisted on Nov. 18, 1861, as lieutenant colonel, and was commissioned into the 12th Illinois Cavalry. Promoted to colonel, Jan. 5, 1864; and brevet brigadier general, Mar. 13, 1865. He was lost at sea aboard the steamer Cambria, Oct. 19, 1870. He was the son of Massachusetts Governor John Davis.

Colonel 8th Maine Infantry

(1832-1917) Born in Limington, Maine. His occupation was that of a lawyer and farmer. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1853. He enlisted on Sept. 7, 1861, as a captain, and was commissioned into Co. I, 8th Maine Infantry. He was promoted to major, April 11, 1864; wounded at Petersburg, Va., June 18, 1864; promoted to lieutenant colonel, Sept. 13, 1864; colonel & brevet brigadier general, Mar. 13, 1865. He was commended for gallantry in the battles of Drury's Bluff, and Williamsburg Road, Va.

Graduated in the West Point class of 1855. Prior to the Civil War he served as a lieutenant in the 5th, and 1st U.S. Infantry Regiments respectively. In 1861, he was commissioned into the U.S. Quartermaster's Department, and was promoted to lieutenant colonel, on August 20, 1862. He remained in the U.S. Army until his resignation, on May 31, 1872.
